Voir le calcul — avec vos chiffres

Area × average depth, padded by your waste and divided by the yield you type from the bag. It assumes the floor dips evenly between the two depths you enter; it does not know your primer, your minimum thickness or how much soaks into an unprimed slab — follow the product's own instructions for those.

Type the floor area, the pour depth at the thinnest and deepest points, and the yield printed on your bag. The tool averages the depth, works out the volume of leveler, adds the waste and rounds up to whole bags — with the mix water for the whole pour if you give it the figure per bag.

Exemple détaillé

Imperial: a 120 sq ft kitchen needs 1/4 in at the high side and 1/2 in at the low side, so the average is 3/8 in (0.375 in). Volume 120 × 0.375 ÷ 12 = 3.75 ft³; with 10% waste 4.125 ft³. At 0.5 ft³ a bag that is 8.25, so 9 bags. If the bag calls for 5 quarts of water, the pour takes 45 quarts — 11.25 gallons.

Metric: 11 m² at 6 mm to 12 mm, average 9 mm. One square metre at 1 mm is one litre, so the volume is 11 × 9 = 99 L; with 10% waste 108.9 L. At 14 L a bag that is 7.8, so 8 bags. At 5 L of water a bag, have 40 L measured out.

Sur le chantier

Mix it all before it skins. Leveler gives you minutes of flow, not hours. Have every bag on site, the water measured into buckets and a second person mixing, so each batch runs into a wet edge. Running out halfway leaves a cold joint and a ridge you will be grinding.

Dam the openings and seal the holes. Self-leveler finds every gap — floor registers, the gap under a door, a crack to the basement. Material that runs away is material you counted as floor. Foam or tape them before the first bag.

Deep fills get cheaper filler. Where the low end goes well past the bag's maximum depth, many products allow extending with aggregate or a first lift — check the bag. Pouring a deep hollow straight from bags is where the budget goes.

Mistake 1

120 ft² at an average 3/8 in (0.375 in). The apprentice multiplies 120 × 0.375 and says 45 cubic feet of leveler. What is the real volume, in ft³, before waste?

ft³

Quick referencefor leveler

1 m² at 1 mm
1 litre — m² × mm = L
ft² × in ÷ 12
ft³ — 100 ft² at 1/4 in = 2.08 ft³
1 ft³
28,3 L · 1 L = 0,0353 ft³
Coverage to yield
50 ft² at 1/8 in = 0.52 ft³ · 4 m² at 3 mm = 12 L
Average depth
(thinnest + deepest) ÷ 2
US quart
0.946 L · 4 quarts to a gallon

La formule

bags = area × (thinnest + deepest) ÷ 2 × (1 + waste) ÷ yield per bag

In feet, divide the depth in inches by 12 so the volume comes out in cubic feet. In metric, square metres times millimetres is litres directly. Round the bag count up.

Questions

How many bags of self-leveler do I need?
Floor area times the average depth gives the volume; divide by the yield printed on the bag and round up. 120 sq ft poured 3/8 in deep on average is 120 × 0.375 ÷ 12 = 3.75 ft³; with 10% waste and a bag that yields 0.5 ft³, that is 8.25, so buy 9 bags.
How do I work out the average depth of a floor that is out of level?
Find the high spot — that sets the finished level, usually at a minimum pour thickness the product asks for — then measure down to the floor at the low spot. Average the thinnest and the deepest pour. That is right for a floor that dips evenly; a single sharp hollow in one corner holds less than the average suggests, so it errs on the safe side.
How much does a bag of self-leveling compound cover?
Read the bag: makers print a yield in cubic feet or litres, or a coverage like "50 sq ft at 1/8 in". Coverage at a depth is the same thing — 50 sq ft × 1/8 in ÷ 12 is 0.52 ft³. In metric, 1 m² at 1 mm deep is exactly 1 litre, so a bag yielding 14 L covers 14 m² at 1 mm, or 3.5 m² at 4 mm.
How much water goes in a bag of floor leveler?
Exactly what the bag says, measured — not by eye. Too much water weakens the surface and lets the sand settle out; too little and it will not flow flat. Type the figure from the bag into the water field and the tool totals it for the whole pour so you can have it measured out in buckets before you mix.
