3-4-5 square calculator
This is the diagonal that proves a 90° corner from the two sides you enter — pure geometry, nothing more. It assumes your two measurements are accurate and taken from the same point; a tape that slips or a mark that wanders throws the check off, so measure both legs twice before you trust the diagonal.
Enter the two legs of a corner and the tool gives the exact straight-line distance between their ends. When your tape reads that number across the diagonal, the corner is square. It also suggests the largest neat 3-4-5 multiple that fits, for a fast check without a calculator on site.
Exemple détaillé
Mark 3 ft along one wall and 4 ft along the other. The diagonal between those marks should be √(3² + 4²) = √25 = 5 ft exactly. Pull the corner until the tape reads 5 ft and it is square. Over a longer wall, 6-8-10 or 9-12-15 give the same right angle with room to spare. In metric the numbers do not change: 3 m and 4 m, and the diagonal reads 5 m (5,000 mm) — or 300-400-500 mm on a small box-out.
Sur le chantier
Go as big as the wall lets you. A 3-4-5 on a 40 ft wall is a mistake. If the 5 ft diagonal is ⅛ in off, the corner is out by about a tenth of a degree, and forty feet away that is 2 in of sill hanging over the footing. Use 24-32-40: the same ⅛ in on a 40 ft diagonal puts the far end a quarter inch out. The bigger the triangle, the less a tape error grows.
Checking the whole rectangle at once. Once the corners are set, pull the diagonals. A 28 × 40 building has a diagonal of √(28² + 40²) = 48.83 ft, which is 48′ 10″ — both of them (in metric, 8.53 × 12.19 m gives 14.88 m). If they differ, half the difference is how far a corner has to move. Equal diagonals on a four-sided figure with the right lengths is the only proof it is square.
Metres. 3-4-5 is a ratio, so 3 m, 4 m and 5 m work exactly, and so do 1.5-2-2.5 on a small slab. The tool takes any two sides in either unit and gives the diagonal; you decide which multiple fits the space.

- Multiples of 3-4-5
- 6-8-10 · 9-12-15 · 12-16-20 · 15-20-25 · 18-24-30 · 24-32-40
- How an error grows
- ⅛ in off on a 5 ft diagonal is about 2 in off at 40 ft; on a 40 ft diagonal, ¼ in — use the biggest triangle that fits
- Rectangle diagonal
- √(length² + width²) · 20 × 30 = 36.06 · 24 × 36 = 43.27 · 28 × 40 = 48.83 · 30 × 50 = 58.31 · metric 6 × 9 m = 10.82 · 8 × 12 m = 14.42
- Fix a racked corner
- move it half the difference between the two diagonals
- Métrique
- 3-4-5 m, or 1.5-2-2.5 m, or 300-400-500 mm — same ratio · ⅛ in is about 3 mm
Waste & overagewhat to add, and why
- There is nothing to buy here, but there is something to spend: use the biggest multiple of 3-4-5 the site allows (9-12-15, 12-16-20). The angle you are out by is the miss divided by the size of the triangle, so a quarter-inch error on a 3 ft triangle throws the line out more than half again as far as the same quarter-inch on a 5 ft one — and five times as far as on a 15 ft one.
Mistakes to catchbefore you order
- Measuring the legs from the corner but the diagonal from the outside of the batter board — all three marks have to be on the same line or string.
- Pulling the tape with sag on the diagonal. Even a 30 ft pull droops enough to read long; keep it taut, or have the tape supported mid-span.
- Squaring one corner and assuming the rest follow. Check both diagonals of the rectangle — if they differ, the shape is a parallelogram no matter how good the first corner was.
What an inspector looks forthe building inspector at the footing call, and your own surveyor before that
On this part of the job
- The building's position on the lot: setbacks to each line, measured from the survey pins. A square building in the wrong place is the most expensive kind of accurate.
- That the layout on the ground matches the site plan's dimensions and orientation.
- Diagonals equal across the whole rectangle, not just one corner squared.
- Batter boards and offsets left in place and on a stable reference, so the layout can be re-established after the excavator has been through.
Have this ready
- The site plan with the setback dimensions.
- The survey pins found and flagged.
- Both diagonals measured and written down before you dig.
Every figure an inspector measures against comes from the code your jurisdiction has adopted, the stamped drawing, or the manufacturer's printed instructions — so none of them are printed here. Look the number up in your own book, type it into the tool, and the arithmetic is yours.
La formule
diagonal = √(A² + B²)
This is Pythagoras: the two sides of the corner are the legs of a right triangle and the diagonal is the hypotenuse. The 3-4-5 triple is simply the smallest whole-number set that satisfies it, which is why the trade remembers it.
Questions
- How does the 3-4-5 method square a corner?
- Any triangle with sides in the ratio 3:4:5 has its right angle where the 3 side meets the 4 side. Measure 3 units along one side and 4 along the other; when the straight-line distance between those two marks is exactly 5 units, the corner is square. Bigger multiples — 6-8-10, 9-12-15 — are the same triangle and read more accurately over a long wall.
- What is the diagonal of a rectangle?
- It is the square root of the two sides squared and added — plain Pythagoras. For a 12 ft by 16 ft layout the diagonal is √(144 + 256) = √400 = 20 ft; for 3.6 m by 4.8 m it is √(12.96 + 23.04) = √36 = 6 m. If both diagonals of a rectangle measure the same, the corners are square and the shape is true.
- What if my sides are not 3 and 4?
- The 3-4-5 ratio is just the easiest triple to remember; the method works for any two legs. Enter whatever the two sides of your corner actually are and the tool gives the exact diagonal to look for. It also suggests the largest tidy 3-4-5 multiple that fits your shorter side, for a quick field check.
- Why measure a bigger triangle?
- A small error in the marks turns into a bigger angle error over a short triangle, so a 3-4-5 measured in inches is far less precise than the same triangle measured in feet. Use the largest multiple your space allows — the diagonal is easier to hit accurately and the corner ends up truer.
